They are attacked by Kakamora, coconut pirates who seek the heart, but Moana and Maui outwit them. Moana premiered during the AFI Fest at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on November 14, 2016, and was released theatrically in the United States on November 23. The film received positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success, grossing $687 million worldwide. She learns that Maui has stolen the heart for a village that he has looked after once he was given his powers from the gods. Through some encouragement from Moana, Maui is given the strength to shape shift with ease, even managing to turn into a hawk. Moana loves her sister dearly, and Simea wants to be just like Moana when she’s older. Unknown to Moana, Nalo, furious at having his curse broken by her and Maui, swears revenge on both of them. He is also furious at Matangi for helping Moana and prepares to punish her just before an old enemy from Moana’s past participates in Nalo’s plan for revenge. • Her mother Sina confesses that her father acts like this because of the loss of his closest friend when they went sailing to unforgiving waters one night in his youth.
• In that moment, Moana meets Tautai Vasa, and sees a vision of her village and island being abandoned and overgrown.
• However, after Tala urged her to leave Motunui, find Maui, and restore the Heart of Te Fiti, Moana decided to fulfill her grandmother’s dying wish and as she left to begin her journey, she saw Tala being reincarnated into a giant manta ray.
• She further explains that despite this, she pushes herself in order to save her dying island, though she can only do so with Maui’s help.
• Together the crew face Nalo with the humans distracting Nalo so that Maui can raise the island.
• Maui reveals to Moana he became a demigod after his mortal parents abandoned him, the gods took pity on him and granted him powers.

Maui is also given his demigod powers and tattoos back, including Mini Maui, and together, they are able to raise Motufetu. Maui encourages Moana to use her new skills and sail the rest of the way, and with the demigod’s teachings in mind, Moana makes it to Te Fiti, much to the delight of a prideful Maui. Maui then takes the heart and flies to Te Fiti, but he is immediately attacked by Te Kā and quickly defeated. Back on the sailboat, Maui becomes depressed that he is unable to shapeshift into anything that he wants with the fish hook but ultimately decides to teach Moana how to sail instead, after the ocean numbs his derrière with a blow dart. A follow-up to Moana was originally developed as a miniseries for Disney+, but by February 2024 it had been reworked into a theatrical sequel. Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foaʻi, the composers and co-songwriters of the first film, returned to score and write the songs, while Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear provided additional songs.

Using her wayfinding skills, she returns to Te Kā and gets past Te Kā Moana to return the heart. Reaching the top of the mountain, Moana realizes that the island is gone and that Te Kā is actually Te Fiti without her heart. She asks the ocean to clear a path so that she can have Te Kā approach her. She connects with Te Fiti and opens her eyes to show her what she has become. Te Fiti calms down and lets Moana restore her heart which brings everything, including herself, back to normal. It continues the story of Moana and Maui, who embark on a new quest to explore the uncharted regions of Oceania and encounter new cultures and creatures.

In a mid-credits scene, Nalo plans his revenge and is about to punish Matangi for helping Moana, when the giant crab Tamatoa arrives to join his cause. Moana and her crew are attacked once again by the Kakamora, but soon learn they want what they do as well, leading to the Kakamora giving them a weapon to aid them, as well as the aid of a skilled coconut warrior Kotu. Moana is separated from her group and meets Matangi, a goddess who is the unwilling companion of Nalo. Matangi aids Moana as Nalo being defeated means she can be free from the clam she is in. She reveals she has Maui and had him here to assure her and Moana would reunite, before sending them to where they have to go.
Moana and Heihei sail for Motunui and arrive as the island is recovering from the curse entirely. Having restored the safety of the sea, Moana takes her place as a Chieftess of Motunui and the people of the village break out their ancestor’s boats. Voyaging begins anew, and Moana leaves her mark of leadership on Motunui’s sacred mountain- a seashell, symbolizing the unity of her duties to her people and her passion for the ocean. She reunites with her parents, with Tui now accepting that going past the reef suits her. Now that the villagers can return to wayfinding, they release the boats from the hidden cave. On April 3, 2023, Disney CEO Bob Iger and Dwayne Johnson shared the news during Disney’s annual shareholder’s meeting Monday, that a live-action remake of the 2016 animated film, Moana, would be in development.
Despite her sudden feeling of self-doubt, Moana follows Maui into Lalotai, and eventually finds the fishhook. She distracts Tamatoa long enough for Maui to take back his hook, but the demigod finds that his shapeshifting abilities are out of whack. Feeling powerful, Tamatoa attacks Maui and imprisons Moana to prevent her from interfering. As she watches helplessly, Tamatoa taunts Maui on his hidden insecurities and alludes to a tragic past. As such information was previously unknown to her, Moana is confused by Tamatoa’s words.
The craftswoman Loto, experienced elder farmer Kele, and historian and fanboy Moni. Even though Sina does not allow Moana to go anywhere near the sea like Tui does, Moana shares a loving relationship with her mother. Sina also warns Moana that sometimes who they wish they could be is just not meant to be, referencing Moana’s love for the ocean while comforting her daughter. Maui tells Moana that he didn’t want her to come along with him to save Motufetu, because she might die. As they approach his storm, Nalo sends his giant eels to wreak havoc on Moana, with one managing to swallow Moni, and another damaging the sail of the raft. Before they are forced to retreat by the sunrise, Maui manages to save Moni.
